Initial Ideas Mock-ups (Manchester Buses)

Praise Campaign:
  • Developing a campaign to support sustainable behaviour. Approach with the notion of praising sustainable behaviours to encourage more to adopt them.
  • Employs psychological principles, such as developing social norms, within the text of the design in order to make the behaviours more achievable.
  • Uses Apfel typeface, designed to use 18% less ink, trying to incorporate sustainability into the design process.
  • Idea is for it to be presented on a bus (sustainable mode of transport). Saw a bus in Manchester with a similar idea going on (see below).

> The new fleet of 32 zero emissions vehicles will serve the 111 and 43 routes connecting Manchester City Centre and Manchester Airport as well as five hospitals and three universities.> These zero emission buses can travel 190 miles on a single charge.> A double decker bus can already take more than 70 cars off the road and the new e-buses will save 2208 tonnes of carbon a year compared to the existing fleet, as well as improving local air quality.

> Nice idea, think it needs developing further though.
 - Considering the aesthetic more, how to incorporate the typeface into the rest of the design etc.
 - Where does imagery come into this?
> Does produce waste though, massive posters and banners made of plastic isn't the greenest.
 - Are there ways around this or is there a more sustainable idea?

Highlighting the Sustainable Alternative:
  • Presenting sustainable alternatives more in supermarkets, not creating another sustainable brand to add to the problem.
  • Avoids putting a new sustainable item on the shelf but highlights those that are already there.
    - Loose veg is a really good one! It has no packaging, all that there is is paper bags for people to use which are easy to recycle. And often isn't any more expensive.
  • Used Morrisons as an example as they're my local supermarket and have already employed a lot of sustainable alternatives (eg wonky veg).
  • Feel as though this fits in with research, making the more sustainable choice noticeable when it's going to be most effective.

> Design is in line with Morrisons existing brand, wanting it to look as authentic as possible.
- Feel as though it would be better to have it fit than be it's own branding, people would recognise and take it more seriously this way.

> Think the idea is good, however it is more of an initiative for supermarkets to get on with rather than a design choice.
- Would this be an appropriate choice as a practical for the project? Isn't new would be an extension of existing branding etc.
