Need to demonstrate the awareness of the relationship between the theoretical and practical contexts of your own creative concerns. - Key LO of the module.
What is Evaluation/Reflection?
Evaluation and reflection are interchangeable, involve looking back and assessing actions and impacts.
- Reflection is something that happens more often throughout a project and is considered to be more personal.
- Evaluation often happens at the end of the process and is more objective, clinical and pragmatic.
Kolbs Learning cycle:
Experience - Doing having experience > Observation - reviewing reflecting on experience > Conceptualisation - concluding, learning from experience > Experimentation - Planning, trying out what you've learnt.
Gibbs Reflective Cycle:
Action plan > Description > Feelings > Evaluation > Analysis > Conclusion (then back to action plan)
Don't jusr nt descirption in an evaluation/reflection needs to include thoughts and feelings (why, how, so what, what as the impact).
Links certain details to the rational showing a deeper understanding.
What is Synthesis?
Synthesis means combining information and ideas to understand something more fully.
Ways to synthesis:
Analyse the steps, decisions, processes you took and what the results were in each instance.
You can refine and expand upon these points – identifying the most relevant material that relates your theme, quotes, theories and the practical exploration you undertook.
important words / concepts / theories / writers / practitioners that relate directly to your research project. What are they? Why are they important?
Discuss and analyse activities you have undertaken, why did you decide to do this and what did you learn / what was the impact?
Synthesis could be the link between:
Two quotes / texts ----------------------------------------------- Explain what the link is
Quote and image / practitioner -------------------------------- Explain what the link is
An event and theory -------------------------------------------- Explain what the link is
A concept / theory and a practical experiment ---------------Explain what the link is
Practical experiment and a decision on your direction ----- Explain what the link is
A series of refined experiments --------------------------------Explain what the link is
Method of making work and its format ---------------------- Explain what the link is
Promps or questions for writing evaluation:
What was your question?
What learning took place? What research was useful to you?
What processes or approaches did you use to initiate work?
How did your reading / research influence your developing work? Talk about;
- Starting points
- Key developmental decisions - why did these happen?
- Changes in direction - mistakes - realisations - decisions
What went well and why? What were you happy with as an outcome?
- Be critical and analytical.
- This could be ideas, solutions to problems or research.
- Did you invest enough time in the development and testing of your outcomes?
What could you have done better?
- What were the problems you faced?
- What did you do to try to overcome them
What you have learned overall about your theme and how your practice can develop?
- Conclusions about question or subject?
- Things you would do differently next time?
- What useful methods, processes and ideas have been developed?
05-03-2020 = Independent Study (sign up tutorials)
12-03-2020 = Peer Review - Design Boards with Helena
19-03-2020 = Submission Briefing - Outcome Checks
26-03-2020 = Independent Study (sign up tutorials)
---Easter Break (3 weeks) ---
23-04-2020 = Submission
Design Boards:
1 - Rationale
2 - Research
3 - Initial Ideas
4 - Design Development
5 - Final Outcome
6 - Evaluation
For Peer Review, need to show:
- You need to show what direction you are taking the project.
- Proposed ideas for outcomes
- Tests and experiments
- Audience research
- Appropriate contexts and formats
- How the project links to the theoretical.
